In early 2020, the humanitarian crisis and the economic impact from COVID-19 became apparent. An engineering team at Econse Water Technologies, a company dedicated to helping businesses reduce their environmental impact, focused on responding to this crisis.

That team, in partnership with the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) at the University of Waterloo, adapted an existing Econse disinfection system to allow for chemical free disinfection. OZOCAV was born, a cleaner, simpler and more effective alternative to conventional disinfection solutions.

A successful demonstration project was made possible through support from Global Affairs Canada, Innovation Solutions Canada, and NSERC, and with help from Kahnawake Native Renewable Centre.

The OZOCAV technology allows for safe, large-scale, low-cost industrial level disinfection of surfaces and air in high traffic, high turn-over spaces with no consumables. Unlike toxic fogging or other chemical cleaners, our technology doesn’t require employees to evacuate spaces for extended periods of time. Disinfection is immediate on contact, so occupation of rooms and facilities can continue uninterrupted.

OZOCAV will disinfect bacteria, viruses, pathogens, microbes, mold, fungus and more. That means this new technology has the potential to be deployed as a powerful tool against COVID-19, its variants and all future pandemics.
